Three Decisions I took during the Quarantine
It was a typical Quarantine Sunday afternoon, I sat down in bed and started looking through my old photographs as a teenager to kill some time. It's always nice to look back in time and analyze the path that made you who you are today and compare it to where you'd want to be in the future. I've gradually realized how I've changed as a person. The differences between now and then. I'm definitely at a place I dreamt of being at professionally, but, the most striking to me was how unfit and unhealthy I've become with the years. I was devastated at how I let my fitness down... at how I got so comfortable in that lazy bubble of mine and got so absorbed by it.
What happened to the fit, strong, flexible old me? My body aches have dramatically increased in the last 2 years. I thought If this is where I'm at today what have I left for 30 years from now. It was a turning point and funny it happened on a Sunday which allowed me to start fresh on Monday the 6th of April 2020.
I took 3 important decisions to start working on:
1. Start Yoga
With the increasing stress at work during the COVID-19 outbreak, I decided I wanted to combine fitness and meditation together. Although I was never enticed my yoga before, I thought I'd give it a shot. And boy was I surprised! I rolled that mattress out and searched for a beginner's video on youtube of around 25 minutes duration. It felt AMAZING! My upper back tenderness was relieved, my body felt so energized and relaxed at the same time. Let alone a good period spent meditating and diverting one's thoughts.
2. Drink More Water, Drink Less Soda
I'm a Pepsi Diet addict, and that's a fact. Ever since I was 16 my consumption went from a few drinks a month to a 1L bottle a day nowadays. I was at a point where I barely drank any water and made up for the hydration with Pepsi Diet. And although I've tried to cut it out before It was quite difficult to do so. Instead, I decided that I'd push myself to drink at least 1L of water a day and hopefully by doing so cut down on my Pepsi Diet intake. The last few days I've drunk probably a can or two but most importantly I've drunk my 1 L of water every day. Hopefully, in the coming months, my consumption of diet soda will drop as I go.
3. Prepare My Own Food
Ever since the outbreak, I took the decision to no longer order food from outside, but instead, prepare my own meals at home. And by doing so I'd make sure my food was clean, germ-free and healthy. It's been a few days since I've started, and interestingly I feel much better mentally after having eaten a home-prepped meal rather than one I'd order out. As a matter of fact, going into the kitchen and the actual preparation is quite relaxing to me. There's nothing better than to feel that what you're putting inside your body is full of nutrients and low in all the toxic things you want to avoid.
These 3 simple decisions I took, and though not that drastic, have made me feel much better about myself and it's only been 3 days. I thought by creating good habits I'd at least have stepped into a healthier world, a fitter bubble than where I was a few days ago.
I hope this journey I started will improve my overall health, my mental well-being, and my body strength. Most importantly, I hope through this journey my resilience and self-control will be reinforced.
